Can the complexity of basic robotic functions be captured in single-chip solutions? Continuous progress in microelectronics has enabled an increasing level of integration for sensing, actuation, data processing and control functionalities. Nevertheless, the demanding requirements of robotic systems, particularly humanoid, challenge the state of the art in IC development towards more efficient technical solutions. We will use the opportunity of this talk to review the latest advances of STMicroelectronics in this field and to discuss the challenges ahead.
