This is a placeholder for a list of participants at the VVV11 summer school. It usually gets filled up at the first day of school, and is strictly voluntary. We're expecting 40-something people this year. Feel free of course to add yourself before arrival at the school. For inspiration, see VVV10/VVV09/VVV08/VVV07/VVV06).
For editing, you can ask for your own username/password (email paulfitz@liralab.it to get an account) or use the username "vvv11" and password "s*str*" with the first star replaced with "e" and the last star replaced with "i".

I hold a MS with honors (in 1994) and PhD (in 2000) in electronic engineering both from the University of Genoa. From 2001 to 2002 I was postdoctoral associate at the MIT AI-Lab where I worked on various humanoid robotic platforms. I am assistant professor at the University of Genoa since 2005 and with IIT since 2006. My research activities are in the fields of biologically motivated and humanoid robotics and in particular in developing life-long developing artificial systems that show some of the abilities of natural systems.

Mike Ciaraldi
I am a Professor of Practice in the Computer Science Department of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA USA. I am part of the inter-disciplinary team which created the WPI Robotics Engineering (RBE) program, the first in the US to offer a four-year degree in RBE. Some of my projects: -- Moonraker: Winner of the NASA Centennial Challenge Lunar Regolith Excavation contest, 2009. -- Prometheus: Rookie of the Year, Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition, 2010. -- Oryx: Winner, NASA RASC-AL sample return competition, 2011. Some of my interests: -- Human-robot interaction -- Remote control over long distances (e.g. Earth-Moon) -- Autonomous and semi-autonomous behavior I have connections with some of the other participants and the venue: -- I met Paul when he visited WPI earlier in 2011, which is when he told me about this summer school. -- I met Serena in the waiting room at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. We took the plane together to Genoa and shared a taxi to the train station. -- I have not met Francesca yet, but I presented a paper at the International Network Conference in 2004, which was held at the University of Plymouth. -- In 1972 I took the Settebello high speed train from Rome to Pisa, then the regular train on to Nice, so I must have passed though Sestri Levante. -- My grandfather emigrated to the US in 1915 from Pontecorvo, about halfway between Rome and Naples. Jose Nunez-Varela
I am a third year Ph.D. student at the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham (I am from Mexico!). Last year I started working with the iCub simulator. My research is about the coordination of gaze and actions, so that the robot can make decisions about where to look and what to do next. I am really looking forward to finally work with the real robot, and hopefully I might be able to test what I have done so far with the robot. I am a PhD student working in egomotion estimation and i've been using Chica (iCub's pretty wife) to test
my revolutionary ideas.
My main topic at this moment is called Expected Perception, where I use previous visual information from the
cameras and recent information from the inertial sensor and joint motors to predict new visual
information. This allows me to detect what changed from one time step to the other (unexpected events).

I working as a software architect at the Media Design Center of the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. Currently I am looking for a PhD position to carry on my work on automatically created ontologies that are based on environment features. As a part of my master thesis I developed such a tool (Palamedes) for the visualization of games from the General Game Playing area. Since the game environment is quite restricted the next logical step is to apply the idea to a more complex area that I hope to find in the field of robotics.
